SKY is a 10!
- 10 Years of Staying True

2024 marks ten years of the SKY Girls BW campaign making it a meaningful year and we have attempted to convey this in our choice of activity as well. Here's what we’ve been up to in the past 6 months!

Advisory Board

We welcomed new members to our Advisory Board, giving teens in Gaborone and Francistown the chance to voice their ideas and contribute to the campaign. Their insights help us stay true to our mission and ensure our initiatives remain relevant and impactful.

Partnerships and Competitions

UNICEF Partnership

We teamed up with UNICEF ESARO to engage adolescent girls in Botswana, Kenya, and Zambia on menstrual health, SRHR, and climate change, reaching over 300,000 people with our SRHR videos on consent. Through this we managed to address some critical issues via collaborative messaging and advocacy.

New Capitol Cinemas Partnership

In April we held a press conference at New Capitol Cinema to celebrate our decade-long journey. The Keynote speaker Jennifer Makgabenyana, from FNB and artists such as Han-C, Kopano Kgabi, and Rai serenaded the audience.

Our partnership with NCC will enable free screenings of the upcoming “Tikula” series, showcasing our achievements and engaging the community.

In May, we traveled to Jwaneng for World No Tobacco Day with the Ministry of Health. We set up stalls at the local mall and city center, collecting over 50 pledges from students committing to a tobacco-free lifestyle. Raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.

During the first quarter of the year, we released our 37th issue of our publication, featuring Hon. Bogolo Kenewendo, Tshepo Jamila Moyo, Dr. Aone Ditirwa, and guest editor, Samantha Mogwe. We also hosted an intimate launch event for girls who participated in our magazine distribution raffle, featuring influencers and speakers. The event included a panel discussion and a make-your-own mocktail stand, celebrating our journey and engaging with our community.

TIKULA coming to Botswana

Our popular local drama series ‘Matswaka Bae,’ produced in 2016, has evolved into Tikula in Zambia. It will air for free at New Capitol Cinema and on BTV and YTV, with over 2 million views and 2 seasons on YouTube. Expanding our reach and impact through engaging and relevant content. We’ll be sharing dates for this premier on our pages soon.

Guidance and Counseling Takeover

We continued to engage with schools through our SKY school talks. In June, we took over guidance and counselling lessons at Marang CJSS and Bonnington CJSS. We taught material from our magazine on goal setting and mind mapping, engaging the students in meaningful discussions. Throughout the year, we’ve been able to reach over 3,000 students through our school talk tours; sharing personal stories, affirmations, and distributing our wristbands. We recently honored an invitation to Kgamanyane CJSS in Mochudi, using the resources to reach girls in and around Gaborone.

Digital Initiatives

We hosted a modeling series with Miss Teen Universe Botswana 2023, Palesa Motsewetsho, and reflected on our 10-year journey with influencers like Samantha Mogwe, Maxine Magwape, Zeus, and Marang Selolwane. We also celebrated April Fools' Day with a prank post, receiving over 1,000 reactions. This post went semi viral and showed us that young people and their parents truly care about SKY and the work that we do.

Social Media

Our social media presence continues to grow, given the prevalence of Gen-Z in online spaces. Our TikTok following has steadily expanded to 21.9K followers, up from 14.8K in our previous newsletter. Consistency, understanding our audience's preferences, and using the platform to inspire have been instrumental in our growth. Furthermore, our YouTube subscriber count has nearly doubled, reaching 9,120 subscribers from 8,000, and we have gained an additional 1,000 Instagram followers, bringing our total to 25.8K followers. We are excited to continue our online engagement with our audience.
